Gutter Guards

There are a variety of gutter guards on the market but a couple of the most common are molded plastic screens or mesh wiring that fit over your gutters to keep large debris out and not only helps keep the gutters cleaner but also prevent water from getting blocked and running over the gutters onto the ground close to your house. Most people think gutter covers are a way to keep from having to clean their gutters every year. Generally this is not true. You will still need to clean your gutters, you probably just won't have to clean out quite as much. The only way to keep your gutters completely clean is to have the gutter guard cover it 100%, but then no water could get into the gutter and funnelled away from the house. With the gutters blocked you have a problem as water can't flow through.

The best reason to have a gutter guard installed is to prevent the gutters from getting so clogged that you have a water problem in your basement. It's far cheaper to buy a few gutter covers than to do some basement waterproofing after you discover you have a serious water leak problem.

How are they installed?

These guards are installed on the mouth of your gutters and under the roof edge. They usually have small holes in them to allow water to flow through but large debris such as leaves and twigs are caught on top and fall off.

Gutter Guards Do I have to install guards on all my gutters?

No, some people will only install guards on their downspouts. If you are dealing with a tight budget or limited mobility then downspout guards can help without breaking the bank.

Does every homeowner need to install gutter guards?

No. People living in more arid climates without much rain can't really justify the expense. Also, the opinion on this home improvement product is mixed. Some users feel they are very beneficial, others feel they are a waste of time and money. If you are still having to do as much gutter cleaning as before you may not find it helpful. You could think of them more as an insurance policy against future water damage to your basement or foundation. Whether they actually help or not, having that peace of mind can be very beneficial and often worth the cost.

Do I have to install them myself?

No. If you are not the handyman type you can ask your local siding and gutter installer to evaluate your gutter system to see if they need to be installed and give you an estimate for cost.

Is there anything else to consider when buying a gutter guard?

Yes. Be sure to measure your gutter size and get guards that fit appropriately so they don't come out or fall off. Also examine the various types available to you (several are featured on this site) to find the ones that are the most attractive for your home.

Note: Downspouts belong at the corners. If your gutters are longer than 30 feet on one side you'll need a 2nd downspout.
